Ecovillages

Brithdir Mawr

Brithdir Mawr is an intentional community with 180 acres in Wales aiming at ecological sustainability (90% of the energy used comes from hydro and solar power) and home education. Currently there are around twenty people living there. Self-catering volunteers are always welcome to help with building, woodworking and gardening activities, and there is also an independent baclpackers hostel, costing £5.00 adult and £2.50 child a night. (or work in exchange for board can often be negotiated):

Hit the headlines in October 1998 as the local authority planning department discovered them from the air.  See Articles page

Tipi Valley

75 adults and 50 children living low-impact on 160 acres, Tipi Village is possibly the most long-established and biggest 'eco-community' in the UK. Originally only one dwelling (a caravan) was granted planning permission. Since 1984 the community has been involved in a long-running planning dispute with the local council and successive Secretaries of State for Wales, which has so far involved six public enquiries, four high court appeals and a judicial review. However, the authorities failed to move anyone off the land and Brig has just been granted planning permission.

Tir Penrhos Isaf

Our website site provides information on our permaculture holding at Tir Penrhos Isaf. We have been working at Penrhos (or Benthros, as it is known locally) since 1986 and been living here since February 1992 when we gained temporary planning permission from the Snowdonia National Park.

Over that time we have continued to develop our permaculture design for the holding through the practical application of the ethics and principles of permaculture. This work has been (and still is) both hugely rewarding and incredibly challenging. We feel we have learned an enormous amount, some of which is purely information based and can be passed on through these pages.

We hope you find this stuff useful.

Initiatives

Graig Arw Community Project

The community are buying 300 acres and hope to employ at least 50 local people. There are plans for a small alternative energy centre with displays and practical advice on sustainable organic agriculture. A ruined medieval farming village, the site is set snugly into the side of the mountain. Blending traditional craftsmanship with the most up-to-date design technology, the community hopes to be a national sustainable living and working attraction.

Tir Gaia Solar Village

Affordable Solar heated Houses etc. for sale and rent.  Building professionals and others are needed to help progress this project and live at Tir Gaia.  No paid jobs are yet on offer, but remuneration is intended as by earning a self-build plot or through a co-ownership arrangement.  Tir Gaia creates the space for environmental action in a modern way, to create meaningful jobs, and make practical progress towards healing our beautiful Earth before it is too late.
