Who are We?

Our object is to promote sustainable settlement for all by acting as an information resource and news service. Currently, we consist of a few volunteers based around Bristol who:

- Maintain a website of U.K. eco-village projects, skills, and resources

- Provide current information on eco-village theories and practices, alternative technologies, legal and financial resources to assist projects in setting up

- Hold regular meetings to share experiences and information

- Increase public awareness through presswork and this website

We welcome any communication from you. We have tried to ensure that the links scattered throughout this site are accurate. And would be pleased to add links, images and articles from projects sent here. Or post us information about your project and what's going on in your area.

WHAT IS AN ECOVILLAGE?

Eco-villages are citizen initiatives to model sustainable, low-impact, human settlements. they are applicable to both rural and urban settings and accessible to all.

Eco-villagers utilise renewable energy technology, ecological building techniques, and human-scale design to reduce exploitation of natural resources, facilitate community self-reliance, and improve quality of life. They are about the creation of new settlements as well as retrofitting existing villages and urban areas.

An eco-village is designed in harmony with its bioregion instead of the landscape being unduly engineered to fit construction plans. By thinking in terms of bioregions, sustainable settlements are planned considering water availability, the ability to grow food, and accessibility.

Many projects use the principles of permaculture for creating integrated, interactive and efficient systems for structural planning, food production and social needs in their community.

EVNUK is affiliated with the Permaculture Association (Britain) Charity no.290897 and is the British branch of the Global Eco-village Network Europe (GEN-E); a continental branch of the Global Eco-village Network (GEN). These are support networks for projects at varying stages of development throughout the world.
